Ostomy, Ileostomy and Colostomy Procedures

Clinic for Ostomy, Ileostomy, and Colostomy Procedures

Comprehensive Care, Guaranteed.

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdominal wall to divert the flow of bodily waste. An ileostomy specifically involves bringing the end of the small intestine (ileum) through the abdominal wall, while a colostomy involves bringing a portion of the colon (large intestine) through the abdominal wall. Both ileostomies and colostomies allow waste material to be eliminated from the body into a pouch or bag worn externally, bypassing the natural route of the rectum and anus.

Reasons a patient may need an ostomy include:
  • Diverticulitis

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Cancer of the colon or intestines

  • Obstruction in the larger or smaller intestine

  • Injury to the intestines or colon

  • Birth defects affecting the colon or intestines
